IRD Letter Human Review Summary

IRD letter human review content page

Received an IRD letter as an individual and not sure what to do next?

An IRD letter may be more than a general notice. It may relate to tax filing, assessment, information request, payment, address details or follow-up handling. BM can first conduct an initial human review of the letter you received and summarise its actual requirements, risk areas and suggested next steps.

This Type of Letter May Relate To

IRD letters received by individuals may commonly relate to:

  1. 1Individual tax return
  2. 2Notice of assessment
  3. 3Tax demand note
  4. 4Request for additional information
  5. 5Address or personal information update
  6. 6Estimated assessment or overdue-related reminder
  7. 7Other queries relating to personal income, deductions, allowances or tax return information

Common Areas of Uncertainty

For many people, the real uncertainty is not only what the letter says on the surface, but:

  1. 1Whether a reply is required
  2. 2Whether payment alone is enough
  3. 3Whether additional information must be submitted
  4. 4Whether previously submitted information needs to be corrected
  5. 5Whether there is estimated assessment or overdue risk
  6. 6Whether the matter can be handled by yourself or should first be checked by someone experienced

Common Risks

If the actual requirement of the letter is not reviewed first, common risks include:

  1. 1Treating a required action as a general notice
  2. 2Looking only at the amount and missing reply or information requirements
  3. 3Submitting insufficient information and triggering further IRD queries
  4. 4Missing estimated assessment or overdue implications
  5. 5Giving an explanation without understanding the context, making follow-up handling more complicated

Information Usually Needed

For an initial review, BM usually needs to see:

  1. 1A complete and clear image or PDF of the IRD letter
  2. 2The date and file number shown on the letter
  3. 3Any attachments or back pages
  4. 4A brief description of your current situation
  5. 5If the matter involves tax filing or assessment, relevant year information may be needed for follow-up handling
